Hi, I just read your post today, we use the term "farang" alot in my household. I never thought of it as a derogatory word towards Caucasians at all, to me it means Frenchmen or foreigners.. that's all, no other meanings. Usually if we were to address cauasians we would just say "white person"(kon kao).

I live in North America now, and I haven's heard the word "chinaman" used since the late 80's/early 90's. We're mainly referred to as Asians. Even if I was called a "chinaman" I wouldn't take offense to it. If you feel strongly against the use of the word "farang", educating the people as to why its a racist word would be a start.

I have frens from US.. who call us chinese as chinks.. how about that?

Afterall, its the tone or how and why the word is used more important in my humble opinion.

Relax everyone! lets make love.. not war alright..
