Moko
« on: December 17, 2009, 06:29:01 PM »

Just came back from Moko. For those who are still in the dark, or cradled in the oblivious crevices of the overly commercial Atlantis, this is a new place that has just opened. Moko - located in Far East Square on China Street.

They just had their official soft launch today amidst much speculation.

In my personal opinion, this is a place definitely to look out for. I applaud the investment that the owners of the place had pumped in.
From my observation, there are only 2 such places like this in the entire Thai scene in Singapore, ie, catered to the well to do clientele.
Members driven and the emphasis on service qualities. These are places run by people who really know what the Thai scene is like in BKK.

One being Muse, the other being this, Moko. Situated in the heart of Shenton Way, this is a place that caters to the VERY well heeled crowd.
If you think Muse is expensive and hi-so, this is somewhere higher than Muse. And I think it is calculated and intentional, gauging from where it is located.

It is alarming to see that the most expensive membership going at $9,888. But they have the girls to justify their exorbitant prices for.
Many many girls! And many fresh faces too. Maybe that's why they can daringly place their lowest flower denomination at $50.
I think they have justified their pricing with the location, decor and the quality of girls. But I wonder how the last variable will last, considering the number of Thai discos that have opened in Singapore. Let's hope the supply can keep up with them.

It is obvious that a lot of their mechanics were augmented from Muse. For instance, their membership packages, and the layout of the premises - ie, the normal area, VIP area and the VVIP areas. One big difference is in the operating hours. Moko closes at 3am while Muse closes at 5am.

The band is so-so (average), and the singers are very normal (unfortunately). One of the female singers used to sing at Muse. It's obvious that it is giving Muse a run for the money. But it is still too early to tell.

One thing I observed of the place is the bad sound system. They obviously put in a lot of money for it, but because of the layout and orientation of the space, the sound is glaringly uneven and it just does not seem to fit in properly. It is simply too LOUD. VERY poorly designed sound. On another very different note, the VVIP booths are also way too bright.

This is just a very preliminary assessment of an extremely new place. It is definitely a place to look out for. Mark my words. Let's see how it goes from here.

I am definitely looking forward!

All this thai clubs which is popping out of singapore as I always say are BKK G-CLUBS modeled . G-CLUBS in Bangkok are actually thai versions of KTV in singapore only that they make it more to clubbing like . A real thai club does not need any "Cayotes" to bring in the crowd . People who frequent real Thai Clubs in BKK will know wat I mean . Juz wondering when will A Real Muse / Funky Villa club will tap into singapore with real Thai band playing wif passion not for flowers or watever . BTW most of the Real thai clubs bands does not have any female members in it and at the most 1 but yet it brings in the crowd .

I can't agree more with you as well. BUT UNFORTUNATELY, it is obvious that the Singapore market is not ready for that. I am personally all for that idea. That is because Funky Villa, Muse and, lately, Demo are the places I like. The reason why these clubs can't work here yet is because customers still go crazy over Thai songs from 5 years back. The customers have not taken the initiative to try out new Thai music and new Thai bands. There is so much more to Thai music than Rak Ter Mai Mee Wan Yood, Nam Tem Kaew and Ying Gwa Sia Jai, not to mention the Chinese Beyond anthems... And the bands in the Thai circle here keeps playing the same annoying songs that the customers like. It's just stagnant. The other reason why a Thai joint in Singapore tend to gravitate towards that of a G-Club, is because customers like having girls around, or more specifically, Thai girls. In BKK, Funky Villa already have beautiful Thai girls as customers, so there is not a need for coyotes. But in Singapore, it just wouldn't be the same. Unless you are into SG girls, PRCs, etc etc, when you go clubbing in a club with a Thai band ala Muse (BKK) or Jet. Hence, you will still require the presence of Thai coyotes and PRs. The songs the bands in BKK play are also way more enjoyable and more up to date. That makes it so much more exciting.

But anyway, I digress. Back to Moko. Moko will apparently open early when it kicks into full operation maybe next week or the week after. They intend to start from 3pm, catering to the happy hour office crowd in the area. For those looking for it, it is above Evolve Mixed Martial Arts. It faces Planet Fitness on the second floor and is very near the carpark. Not entirely sure of all the pricing details, but 1 bottle of Chivas is $220 before gst. As I am not a Martell drinker, I don't know the pricing for it but I was told it is priced similarly as Chivas. The smallest membership package is $1,888. But I think there are also other bottle promotions. Just like Muse, it is NOT a members only club. It's a club where being a member has its privileges.
